Terms of service
These terms explain the rules for using OpenCredia's credential issuance, hosting, verification, API, account, and public credential features.
Last updated: September 1, 2026
1. Acceptance
These Terms of Service govern access to and use of OpenCredia. By creating an account, accepting an invitation, signing an order form, using the app, calling the API, verifying a credential, or otherwise using OpenCredia, you agree to these terms.
If you use OpenCredia on behalf of an organization, you represent that you are authorized to bind that organization. In that case, references to "you" include that organization.
If you have a separate written agreement or order form with OpenCredia, that agreement controls where it conflicts with these terms.
OpenCredia is currently operated by an individual, is not a registered company, and these terms are not a substitute for a signed design-partner agreement.
2. The service
OpenCredia provides software for creating, issuing, hosting, verifying, and managing verifiable credentials, including Open Badges 3.0 credentials and related issuer, recipient, earner, wallet, verification, and API features.
OpenCredia is currently invite-only and may include design-partner, beta, preview, or experimental features. We may change, suspend, or discontinue features as the product evolves.
OpenCredia is not a certification body, school, employer, or verifier of every real-world claim contained in a credential. Issuer organizations are responsible for the credential programs they run and the claims they choose to issue.
3. Accounts and access
You are responsible for keeping account credentials, sessions, API keys, recovery codes, and multi-factor authentication devices secure.
You must provide accurate account and organization information, keep it current, and promptly notify us if you suspect unauthorized access.
Administrators are responsible for inviting the right people, assigning appropriate roles, removing access when it is no longer needed, and supervising activity inside their organizations and workspaces.
4. Issuer responsibilities
Issuer organizations are responsible for making sure they have the rights, notices, consents, and lawful basis needed to provide recipient, credential, evidence, image, and organization data to OpenCredia.
Issuers are responsible for the accuracy, legality, and appropriateness of credential templates, recipient records, issued credentials, public evidence links, issuer profiles, badge images, endorsements, and revocation or status decisions.
Issuers should not put confidential, sensitive, or recipient-only information in fields that are intended to be public, such as public credential JSON, verification pages, badge images, issuer logos, public evidence URLs, or public profile fields.
5. Public credentials and verification
Some parts of OpenCredia are public by design. Public verification pages, credential JSON, credential JWTs, issuer profiles, achievement pages, public earner profiles, and public collections may be available without signing in.
You understand that public credential data may be copied, cached, indexed, stored, verified, or shared by third parties outside OpenCredia's control.
OpenCredia may preserve credential status, verification, audit, and integrity records where needed to support trust, security, standards compliance, dispute handling, or abuse prevention.
6. Acceptable use
You may not use OpenCredia to violate law, infringe rights, misrepresent credentials, impersonate others, issue fraudulent credentials, upload malicious code, disrupt the service, evade rate limits, probe systems without permission, or interfere with other users.
You may not use OpenCredia to publish unlawful, deceptive, harassing, discriminatory, exploitative, or harmful content, or to expose private personal data without appropriate rights and notices.
You may not resell, sublicense, scrape, reverse engineer, or benchmark OpenCredia except where allowed by law or by a written agreement with us.
7. API and integrations
API keys, OAuth clients, bearer tokens, and integration credentials must be kept confidential and used only for authorized organization and workspace purposes.
You are responsible for applications, scripts, imports, exports, webhooks, and integrations that you connect to OpenCredia, including their security and compliance with these terms.
We may enforce rate limits, scopes, suspension, key rotation, revocation, or additional security requirements to protect OpenCredia and its users.
8. Intellectual property
OpenCredia and its software, design, documentation, trademarks, and service content are owned by OpenCredia or its licensors. These terms do not transfer ownership of OpenCredia to you.
You retain ownership of your organization data, credential content, logos, images, evidence links, and other materials you submit to OpenCredia. You grant OpenCredia the rights needed to host, process, display, transmit, verify, secure, and operate that content as part of the service.
You represent that you have the rights needed to upload or submit content to OpenCredia and to authorize public display where you configure content as public.
9. Privacy
OpenCredia's Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and retain personal data. By using OpenCredia, you acknowledge that personal data will be handled as described in that policy.
Issuer organizations may act as controllers or equivalent decision-makers for recipient and credential data they provide to OpenCredia. Issuers are responsible for their own privacy notices and data protection obligations.
10. Confidentiality
Each party may receive non-public information from the other, including business, security, credential-program, technical, product, pricing, support, or operational information that should reasonably be understood as confidential.
The receiving party must use reasonable care to protect confidential information and may use it only to perform under these terms, operate or receive the service, support users, comply with law, or exercise rights under a written agreement.
Confidentiality obligations do not apply to information that becomes public without breach, was already known without restriction, is independently developed, or is received lawfully from another source without a confidentiality duty.
11. Fees and payment
OpenCredia is currently onboarding design partners and does not describe self-serve checkout or standard public pricing in these terms.
If paid access applies, fees, taxes, billing cadence, renewal, cancellation, usage limits, and refund terms will be stated in the applicable order form, invoice, or written agreement.
Unless a written agreement says otherwise, fees are non-refundable once paid, and unpaid amounts may result in suspension or termination of paid features.
12. Third-party services
OpenCredia may rely on third-party providers for hosting, database infrastructure, authentication support, email delivery, media storage, monitoring, security, and other operational needs.
Third-party websites, wallets, verifiers, credential inspectors, issuer websites, evidence URLs, and integrations are not controlled by OpenCredia. Their own terms and privacy notices may apply.
13. Availability and support
We aim to operate OpenCredia reliably, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service unless a separate written agreement says otherwise.
We may perform maintenance, change infrastructure, apply security controls, suspend abusive traffic, or restrict features to protect the service.
Support channels and response times may depend on your plan, design-partner arrangement, or written agreement.
14. Disclaimers
OpenCredia is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis to the maximum extent permitted by law.
We do not warrant that credentials issued through OpenCredia will satisfy every legal, regulatory, employment, education, procurement, certification, interoperability, or third-party verifier requirement.
You are responsible for independently determining whether OpenCredia is appropriate for your credentialing program and compliance obligations.
15. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, OpenCredia will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, lost data, loss of goodwill, or business interruption.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, OpenCredia's total liability for claims related to the service will not exceed the amounts paid to OpenCredia for the service during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or 100 USD if no amounts were paid.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these limits may not apply to you.
16. Indemnity
You will defend, indemnify, and hold harmless OpenCredia from claims, damages, liabilities, losses, and expenses arising from your content, credential programs, integrations, misuse of the service, violation of these terms, or violation of law or third-party rights.
17. Suspension and termination
You may stop using OpenCredia at any time. Organization administrators may remove users, revoke API keys, archive workspaces, or request account or organization closure subject to applicable agreements and retention needs.
We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these terms, create security or legal risk, fail to pay amounts due, or use the service in a way that may harm OpenCredia, users, recipients, or the public.
After termination, some provisions continue, including those about public credential records, confidentiality, intellectual property, payment obligations, disclaimers, liability limits, indemnity, and dispute handling.
18. Export and sanctions compliance
You may not use OpenCredia in violation of export control, trade control, or sanctions laws that apply to you, OpenCredia, the service, credentials, identity data, API access, integrations, cryptographic-signing features, or related technology.
You may not use OpenCredia if you are prohibited from receiving the service under applicable sanctions or trade restrictions, or to issue, verify, host, or transfer credentials for prohibited end uses.
19. Governing law and disputes
The governing law, venue, and dispute process may be set in your signed agreement or order form with OpenCredia.
If no separate written agreement applies, these terms should be reviewed and completed with governing-law and dispute-resolution language before production or paid use.
Before starting a formal claim, the parties agree to try to resolve the dispute in good faith by contacting each other with a description of the issue and requested resolution.
20. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as OpenCredia changes. When we make material changes, we will update the date on this page and provide additional notice when required.
Your continued use of OpenCredia after updated terms become effective means you accept the updated terms.
21. Miscellaneous
These terms, together with any applicable order form, written agreement, or policy referenced here, form the agreement between you and OpenCredia for use of the service.
Neither party may assign these terms without the other party's consent, except that OpenCredia may assign them to a successor entity, including on incorporation.
If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect. A party's failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. Notices may be sent through the service, by email, or by other reasonable means.
22. Contact
For questions about these terms, contact OpenCredia at [email protected]. Include enough detail for us to understand the account, organization, workspace, credential, or issue involved.
